Don’t let me or my writings influence or scare you in any way, instead, allow me to be used as a vessel to open the Word, just a little bit, and hopefully, together we are going to read and study His Word, and let God teach us what He wants us to hear.
Since the beginning of this study, our vision has been that we are ONLY going to follow what is found in the Holy Bible, that pertains to us, and we realize that it’s ONLY from our own effort that we put into this study, that we’re going to take anything away for our own use.
The verses we are going to study tonight:
2 Timothy 3:16-17; Colossians 3:16; Romans 15:4; Jonah 1:1-3; 1 Corinthians 10:11, 10:1.
So, tonight’s lesson should begin with a little bit of an explanation from me.
I believe the reason why we have so many different versions today of the original writings of the Bible is because we have so many different languages how people talk today.
If there was only ONE specific language or version that the Word was to be studied in, I find it hard to believe that God would not have told us that language or version of the Bible.
Just look at the different languages that existed during the writing of the Bible, before it was even a book.
Hebrew, Aramaic (a cousin of Hebrew), and Greek.
2 Timothy 3
vs16 ‘…All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness…’
vs17 ‘…so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work…’ NASB (New American Standard Bible)
So, as I was writing this lesson, I started copying and pasting verses taken from the Bible and then I started using a couple of different versions on some verses and I thought, tonight I’m going to use the same different versions for every verse.
I’ve chose the KJV (King James Version), the NASB (New American Standard Bible), the GNT (Good News Translation) and EASY (Easy English Bible).
Colossians 3:16
‘…Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord…’ KJV (King James Version)
‘…Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God…’ NASB (New American Standard Bible)
‘…Christ’s message in all its richness must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct one another with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God with thanksgiving in your hearts…’ GNT (Good News Translation)
‘…Let Christ’s message always be in your thoughts, with all the good things that it brings. Use that message to teach and to warn each other. Be very wise as you do that. And also sing all kinds of spiritual songs to praise God. Sing psalms and Christian songs. As you sing, thank God from inside yourselves…’ EASY (Easy English Bible)
Have you ever heard or asked these questions before: Why was the O.T. even written; who was it written too and was it written to warn us?
So, I’m planning on answering these questions by using the different versions to hopefully, clarify what has been said.
God inspired the Old Testament to be written down so it could warn all of us what has happened in the past.
In Romans 15:4, Paul says that the O.T. was written for God’s people today. In this verse, however, he emphasizes the Good News found in the O.T.
Romans 15:4
‘…For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope…’ KJV (King James Version)
‘…For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope…’ NASB (New American Standard Bible)
‘…Everything written in the Scriptures was written to teach us, in order that we might have hope through the patience and encouragement which the Scriptures give us…’ GNT (Good News Translation)
‘…Everything that people wrote in the Bible in past times is there to teach us something. Those words help us to be patient and strong. As a result, we can trust God to do what he has promised…’ EASY (Easy English Bible)
I am not trying to upset anyone by using my own made-up version, but I’d like to be able to teach the reader how they to, can break down the verses found in the Bible so they can understand them.
‘…the O.T. was written to educate us. By us studying Scripture, we should be able to trust God and learn what He has promised to us…’ Leon’s paraphrasing
Here is another question that pops up frequently: Life is short; why should I spend time studying the O.T. when the N.T. seems to do away with the teachings of old?
The easiest answer is that the N.T. tells us to read and study the entire Bible.
I put a good majority of the blame on some of the Bible teachers today, they teach to STUDY the entire Bible, and they leave it as that, but nowhere in the Word are we told we should FOLLOW everything that we read and what has been written in the Bible.
The passage found in the Bible that I always use to explain this is found in the O.T., in the book of Jonah.
Jonah 1:1-3
‘…Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying…’ ‘…Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me…’ ‘…But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord…’ (King James Version)
‘…The word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying…’ ‘…Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, because their wickedness has come up before Me…’ ‘…But Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship that was going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and boarded it to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the Lord…’ NASB (New American Standard Bible)
‘…One day the Lord spoke to Jonah son of Amittai…’ ‘…He said, go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it; I am aware of how wicked its people are…’ ‘…Jonah, however, set out in the opposite direction in order to get away from the Lord. He went to Joppa, where he found a ship about to go to Spain. He paid his fare and went aboard with the crew to sail to Spain, where he would be away from the Lord…’ GNT (Good News Translation)
‘…The Lord spoke a message to Jonah, Amittai’s son…’ ‘…He said, ‘Go now to the great city of Nineveh. Tell the people in the city that I know how wicked they are. Tell them that I will punish them because of their sins…’ ‘…But Jonah did not want to obey the Lord’s command. He decided to run away to Tarshish. He went down to Joppa. There he found a ship that was ready to sail to Tarshish. After he had paid for the journey, he got into the ship. He wanted to go on the ship to Tarshish, to get far away from the Lord…’ EASY (Easy English Bible)
We are not being taught to run away from God and hide on a ship going to Spain so we can get away from Him. We’re NOT told we should FOLLOW the example that we can get from Jonah.
Come on, REALLY!!!
But what we are shown is what could happen to us, like it did to Jonah, if we were to flee from God without doing as He has asked us.
The Apostle Paul tells us that the LORD’s judgments on OT Israel were recorded for our benefit, so we know what God did and we know what Israel did. In this verse, Paul recounts the LORD’s judgments that He put on Israel during the Wilderness Wandering.
1 Corinthians 10:11
‘…Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come…’ (King James Version)
‘…Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come…’ NASB (New American Standard Bible)
‘…All these things happened to our ancestors so that we would learn from them. They are written in the Bible to teach us important lessons. We are people who live at a time when all things will become complete…’ EASY (Easy English Bible)
This next verse I want to use as an example why the Bible is read using so many different versions. The story in front of you opens a little more in each different version.
1 Corinthians 10:1
‘…Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea…’ (King James Version)
‘…For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and they all passed through the sea…’ NASB (New American Standard Bible)
‘…I want you to remember, my friends, what happened to our ancestors who followed Moses. They were all under the protection of the cloud, and all passed safely through the Red Sea…’ GNT (Good News Translation)
‘…My Christian friends, remember what happened to our Israelite ancestors. Moses led them out of Egypt long ago. While they followed Moses, they all walked under the same cloud. All of them walked across the Red Sea…’ EASY (Easy English Bible)
By using different versions, we should be changing some words to help clarify what is being said. In the above verses, we read the same message, but we clearly can see more into the verse by using all the different versions.
So, the reason I chose to use the KJV, NASB, GNT and EASY versions: the KJV, by many believe that it is the only Bible that should be read in the English language; I disagree with that. The NASB is the most accurate version in English language compared to the original writings. The GNT, to me, is my favorite version; it uses the words that I use when I talk; it is the most comparable to me. And then finally, the EASY version, it clarifies the words down to their very basic form. If there is a verse and I cannot understand what has been written, I go to an EASY version to help me see what has been said.
When I study, I try to always check out several different versions just so I can clarify to myself what has been written.
I love y’all. Keep your Bibles always open and study the Word so that you will always know if some preacher or teacher of the Bible, is lying to you.
Open the Bible for yourself and read the Word that God has given to us.
Jesus, I pray that those ears and eyes, either listening or seeing this message today would be opened to the very fullest and allow Your love to come inside their lives and comfort them. Teach us Jesus. Protect us. We love You. Amen
